Connection to Myra: When Myra first met John Beveridge remains unclear. From 1869 to 1870, John Beveridge practiced law at the firm of Bradwell & Beveridge, alongside Myra’s husband, located at 80 Washington Street in Chicago. During the Civil War, Beveridge served on the Soldiers’ Home Board of Chicago working with Myra, who dedicated her efforts to the Soldiers’ Fair.

Behind the Novel: Beveridge began his journey in law while teaching in Tennessee around 1845, before returning to Illinois in 1851. Similarly, James Bradwell followed a parallel path, studying law and teaching in Tennessee before also moving back to Chicago to establish his legal practice. Beveridge served as an officer in the Union Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and returned as a celebrated hero.Later in life, he retired to Hollywood, California, where his daughter-in-law, Daeida Beveridge, earned the title “Mother of Hollywood” for her pivotal role in co-developing and naming the area.
